Russ Meyer Cleavage Collection: Finders Keepers, Lovers Weepers/Good Morning and Goodbye/Common-Law Cabin

  • 4 DVD set
  • NTSC
  • DVD Region 1
Overlooked and underrated, "Goodbye Lover" is a tawdry, tasty film noir with a soft spot for its scheming antiheroine. With her platinum Lulu bob, a killer wardrobe, and a "Sound of Music" fetish that inspires her to "climb every mountain" of bad-girl ambition, Patricia Arquette is perfectly cast as Sandra, the sweet but lethal wife of Jake (Dermot Mulroney), who works in a top-drawer ad agency with his brother Ben (Don Johnson). Weary stud Ben falls prey to simultaneous affairs with Sandra and his devoted secretary (Mary-Louise Parker), and the cynical Detective Pompano (Ellen DeGeneres) unravels the murder-for-insurance plot while her clueless Mormon partner (Ray McKinnon) tries to keep pace. Combining mordant humor and rampant depravity, this deliciously dark comedy starts fast and never lets up, liberating director Roland Joff?© ("The Killing F! ields") from the sobriety of his previous work. The entire cast is great, but it's DeGeneres who makes this a recommended sleeper. Head of State (Full Screen Edition)

  • TESTED OK
  • 2003 DATE
Chris Rock co-wrote, directed and stars in this uproarious comic outing about an obscure alderman who is selected to run for president when the current frontrunner is killed in a plane crash. Nominated as a sure-fire loser to eliminate competition for a shady senator, Rock shocks everyone when he begins to gain popularity and becomes an actual contender. Can he and running mate Bernie Mac turn the tide and make it to the White House? With Dylan Baker, Robin Givens, Keith David, and Tracy Morgan. 95 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; audio commentary by Rock; deleted scenes; "making of" documentary; biographies; photo gallery.Chris Rock writes, directs, and stars in the sassy political comedy Head of State, about Mays Gilliam, a black man who's chosen by t! he leaders of an unspecificed party to run for president after their previous candidates die in a plan crash. Though he initially follows his handler's instructions, Gilliam soon starts handling speeches in his own brazen, outspoken way, which starts to turn the tide--which upsets the party leaders who chose him, since they expected him to lose. While Head of State doesn't quite have the razor wit that Rock wields in his stand-up routine, it has a sharper edge than just about any other political satire in recent memory. Rock bursts with charisma, and his supporting cast (including Lynn Whitfield, Dylan Baker, Robin Givens, and especially Bernie Mac as Gilliam's brother and running mate) provide solid comic support. --Bret FetzerChris Rock co-wrote, directed and stars in this uproarious comic outing about an obscure alderman who is selected to run for president when the current frontrunner is killed in a plane crash.
